If you’ve thumbed through the pages of any design catalog or home furnishing magazine such as Domino or Architectural Digest recently, you’ll notice that bedroom furniture is not what it used to be. Instead of overly frilly designs that use gathered bed ruffles or other materials, bedroom décor is much more understated and simple, allowing the natural beauty of the room to shine through. If your room is outdated or in need or some refreshing, remember that bedroom furniture has evolved! But before you go out and spend a lot of money on furniture that will replace your old pieces, make sure that you research what types of furniture are out there today – and what is best for your specific bedroom.

For most people, the ideal focal point of your bedroom will be the bed itself. For the most modern look, you may want to try one of the many Asian platform beds on the market, which use traditional Japanese or Indonesian design principles to simplify and beautify your space. But if more traditional Western style is more your taste, and if many modern platform beds are a bit too geometric for you, there are many sleigh-style pieces that also offer the benefits of platform beds. In addition to finding a platform bed that will work with your personal style, you may also want to consider the size of the bed you choose for your room. The bedroom furniture industry suggests that the size of your bed should be proportional to the size of your room, with exceptions for personal needs. A small room, therefore, may fit a double bed best so that you will have room to move around and reach your belongings. A larger room can handle a king size platform bed or queen bed, and will need its size in order to make an impression.

You might also want to consider the wide range of bedroom accessories that are available with your options of modern platform beds. Bedroom sets are built today, even out of such high-quality materials as hardwood like teak and mahogany, which are designed to coordinate with each other. This means that your platform bed shouldn’t send you on a wild goose chase for a matching dresser or nightstand. Look for good quality furniture that features nightstands, dressers, chests, mirrors, or armoires in a wood and finish that are specifically designed to match your traditional, modern, or Asian platform bed. These items also help to provide a consistent style throughout your room, making decorating a much easier process. In little to no time at all, you can have a bedroom that turns heads and makes relaxing a breeze—you won’t be able to wait to get to bed, but you may be too excited to fall asleep!
